![]() Child's Play gets a perfunctory update just so the storyline can include things like apps and drones, but at its core, it wishes so hard that it was actually made in the 80s that it ends up feeling redundant. Who's darker? The deadpan goth chick or the murderous doll? I don't know, but I couldn't wait to find out…and then I saw the movie. On paper, Aubrey Plaza in a reboot of a 1988 horror classic sounds like a match made in that forbidding recess of hell I'd love to visit. ![]() ĬHUCK IT - My Review of CHILD'S PLAY (2 Stars) ![]() The original Chucky is still the number one true Chucky in my opinion and this is just an interesting fresh take on a true cult film. It begs the question why they didn't make a whole new character and attempt a fresh story idea. This film is a little soulless and I blame the filmmaker decision on this. ![]() I thought the decision to reboot was a haste decision and without true merit, considering the devotion I have for the core series. I love the original series and will be re-watching the series for Halloween. The film is quite shocking and it serves up some twisted evil by the new Chucky doll. Chucky just lacks the personality that Dourif has established and Hamill hasn't got the right film to be immersed in to clearly set him apart from the core franchise. Child's Play didn't need a reboot when the original filmmaker is still punching out content for the current series. Fans of the original series will be slightly annoyed here, and justly so. Klevberg and screenwriter Tyler Burton Smith clearly have keen interest in the sci-fi themes at the heart of this re-imagining, and the first two acts of Child's Play are a creepy and interesting Black Mirror-style parable about the dangers of over-relying on modern technology, with novel themes like it is the violence and corruption in humans that ultimately creates the violence and corruption in technology.Reboots are in high demand by studios. Once Chucky takes a sharp turn towards evil, it's up to Andy and his friends to stop the doll, before Chucky can inflict more death and mayhem upon their lives.ĭirected by Lars Klevberg ( Polaroid), Child's Play turns out to be an inspired re-imagining of the Chucky concept but ironically, that same creative inspiration is ultimately dragged down by the film's obligations to the Child's Play brand. That bond lasts until Chucky learns a new way to secure his friendship with Andy: murdering anyone who upsets the boy. Still, Andy likes the companionship and love that Chucky provides, and decides to cover for the dolls glitches and flaws. Andy quickly realizes that his Buddi doll, Chucky, isn't normal, as the doll has none of the usual behavioral and safety protocols that it should. Karen tries to boost Andy's spirits by taking advantage of her customer service job at "Zed-Mart," nabbing a new smart toy doll called "Buddi," which was returned for being defective. Andy has a hard time adjusting to his new life - and an even harder time adjusting to Karen's latest "boyfriend," Shane (David Lewis). The new version of the story follows Andy Barclay (Gabriel Bateman), a teenage boy who moves to a seedy part of the city with his young single mom, Karen (Aubrey Plaza).
